Chocoholism, New York style

Here’s a chance to visit the chocolate show this weekend

By Mark Douglas
November 6, 2007

The day after Halloween, people were already turning their focus to Thanksgiving and, yes, Christmas — but not me. I want some more time to contemplate candy.

Clay Gordon, in his recent Dinner Guest Blog post “Taste test,” talked about the basics of tasting chocolate, and that reminded me that Le Chocolate Show New York hits Manhattan this weekend (November 9th-11th). I attended that show a few years back, and it’s an experience I won’t soon forget: Booth after booth of delicious, chocolatey chocolate.

Edible Chocolate Box: Holiday Collection, from Charles Chocolates

But, sadly, it ain’t happening for me this year. Having lived in the NYC area for years, I have to admit I don’t miss it too much, but not being able to do a last-minute trip into the city for an event like this disappoints.

How could I enjoy the experience vicariously? I sent a quick note to Emily Stone of Chocolate in Context, my favorite chocoholic blogger, and soon I was in touch with Chuck Siegel of Charles Chocolates.

We talked a little, and then we talked some more, and we came up with a wonderful opportunity: Culinate will furnish a reader and a guest with two one-day tickets to the show (you pick the day). The lucky pair will then get a personal tour of the show by Chuck, a chocolatier who knows his way around chocolate, and some special chocolate tastings and treats from Charles Chocolates.

For those who can’t be in Manhattan over the weekend, Chuck offered a wonderful second gift of an Edible Chocolate Box. Chocolate within chocolate. Yum.

People, this is like winning Willy Wonka’s golden ticket! (I know, I don’t get out enough.)

Entering to win either prize is as simple as leaving a comment below stating:

  1. why you deserve, or need, to go to Le Chocolate Show New York, or
  2. if you can’t attend or don’t live near Manhattan, with whom would you share your Edible Chocolate Box.

We will pick one winner for each prize from all the comments entered below between Tuesday, November 6, at noon PST and Thursday, November 8, at noon PST. The contest has ended, we will announce the winners soon!

Congratulations to our winners: Lori and Stu from NYC for the show tickets and tour, and, as yet to be claimed, the anonymous winner the Edible Chocolate Box

And for the rest of us . . . Chuck has offered to give 10 percent off any order online at Charles Chocolates. Just enter the promotion code “Culinate” with your order before November 30th, 2007. The same secret code also works if you happen by Charles’ booth at the chocolate show this week. Enjoy!

I would love to attend the show in NYC, but since I live in Indiana it is impossible. I would appreciate you putting me in the running for the box of chocolates for me and my husband. Thanks

5. by Cassandra on Nov 6, 2007 at 1:27 PM PST

I would share my Edible Chocolate Box with my family--none of us could ever get enough chocolate.

6. by cdziuba on Nov 6, 2007 at 1:30 PM PST

I live in NJ, I must have chocolate every day or I will perish, and Yes, I will drive into NYC to attend the show when I win! :)

7. by Karen on Nov 6, 2007 at 1:35 PM PST

As a chocolate addict I would LOVE to attend, however since I live too far away I would sincerely love a box of your chocolates. I would share it with my (even bigger chocoholic) father who has taught me how and why to love chocolate and LIFE itself!

8. by madamerkf on Nov 6, 2007 at 1:37 PM PST

The reason I deserve to win this is that today is my birthday and about the only thing that will keep me from burying my head underneath the covers all day today is the thought that there is a whole lotta chocolate in my immediate future! Bring it on!! And yes, I can attend in person...

9. by wanda flanagan on Nov 6, 2007 at 1:40 PM PST

Going would be a dream come true for me but since I cant I would love the chance to win a box of your goodies I would share with my kids

10. by Matt on Nov 6, 2007 at 1:43 PM PST

opps, forgot to enter a comment! I would love to win this because I’ve had a horrible day and am in desperate needs of fine, quality chocolates.

11. by Shearnerve on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:11 PM PST

I want to go, but more importantly, my roomate who has not had a date in.. Why go into long form math? Needs to go. Chocolate is a great substitute for other vices. So, we do need to go, please.

12. by dentondamsel on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:14 PM PST

I would love to visit this show, but driving from Texas to NY is just a bit more than I can do this week.
I would love the chocolates however and would share with all my friends.

13. by Valeen on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:18 PM PST

Sadly, I’m too far away to even smell the tantilizing chocolate, let along imbibe. I’ll have to comfort myself in the thought of sharing the chocolate box with my sweet hubby, (afte the kids are in bed, of course!)

14. by nello90 on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:24 PM PST

I am addicted to chocolate and as a mom of two with no time or energy, chocolate is a nice escape at this point in life, sounds like an amazing event and a nice hour ride for me. thank you

I live to far away to attend unfortunately, but I would love the box of chocolates!

16. by cjdiana on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:27 PM PST

17. by Shelba Lanham on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:27 PM PST

19. by Janet on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:38 PM PST

I must admit, I’m a chocoholic. I don’t know of a 12-step program for this and I’m sure I won’t attend anyway. I’m sorry to say, I probably won’t share the chocolate, should I win it. I have to be honest.

20. by Laura Robertson on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:39 PM PST

If I won this I would share it with my daughter who is coming home on Friday for her two week leave from Afghanistan where she is stationed with the Army. It would make a sweet day even sweeter!

21. by Tandt122 on Nov 6, 2007 at 2:40 PM PST

22. by Tina12312 on Nov 6, 2007 at 3:28 PM PST

23. by Margaret Stephens on Nov 6, 2007 at 3:31 PM PST

24. by anonymous on Nov 6, 2007 at 3:39 PM PST

As a resident of California, attending the event would be out of the question. However, I still would love a box of chocolates sent home to me!

36. by fshapiro on Nov 6, 2007 at 4:55 PM PST

I need to attend the Chocolate Show because I must have my chocolate fix every day since, after all, chocolate is really one of the essential food groups. A personal tour with Chuck, with tastings and treats from Charles Chocolates, would make the Show the most yummy experience ever!

37. by Tanta on Nov 6, 2007 at 5:01 PM PST

Can’t get there from here -- not this year, anyway! However, if I twist their arms, I imagine my family would somehow manage to share prize chocolates with me. Thanks for the drawing!

38. by jjampm on Nov 6, 2007 at 5:20 PM PST

43. by Emilie Storrs on Nov 6, 2007 at 5:50 PM PST

Oh, I’m going to be in NYC this weekend, and I =need= to go because I’ve missed this every other November by being away and I’m one of the biggest chocoholics on the planet!!!!!

44. by Lori on Nov 6, 2007 at 6:03 PM PST

I’m from Manhattan, pregnant, and craving nothing but chocolate and pickles. I would sneak in a kosher dill and enjoy it with the finest chocolate in the world. Baby would love it (and mommy would too)

45. by Darlene936 on Nov 6, 2007 at 6:05 PM PST

I’m lovin chocolate!!!

I would so love to go... this is sweet!

50. by GH Steffee on Nov 6, 2007 at 7:50 PM PST

Yes, Pick Me! Pick Me! And I will bring my chocoholic friend, Roz. Roz is desperate for chocolate now that her significant other is not so significant. If I win only the chocolate box, I will outrightly present it to Roz - and only take a little sniff for myself unless she offers a bite.

51. by Rhonda CLEMENS on Nov 6, 2007 at 8:08 PM PST

I would share the chocolate with my family at the holiday festivities....

52. by C. Duran on Nov 6, 2007 at 8:20 PM PST

I would begrudgingly share the chocolates with my family.....but not too many!

53. by anonymous on Nov 6, 2007 at 9:55 PM PST

I live in NYC and nothing would make my girlfriend happier then to attend this. We eat chocolate everyday anyway, and this would put a huge smile on her face... I just want her to have that smile!

54. by drming5k on Nov 6, 2007 at 10:07 PM PST

New York is my kinda of town

55. by Robert Mcloughlin on Nov 6, 2007 at 10:21 PM PST

because my wife and daughter are nuts about chocolate

56. by annulla on Nov 6, 2007 at 10:41 PM PST

I’ve never attended the legendary Le Chocolate Show New York because tickets are prohibitively expensive for a poor writer -- even one feels that a life without chocolate is not worth living. If you picked me, I would be eternally grateful, as this is probably the only way I’ll ever be able to attend.

57. by Tari Lawson on Nov 7, 2007 at 2:52 AM PST

My girlfriend and I love chocolate. The only thing we like better is spending time together. Attending this show would be a perfect opportunity for us to do both :)

58. by Jasmine on Nov 7, 2007 at 3:29 AM PST

My chocolate loving husband would consider this a sure sign of my affection for him.

59. by susanne odonnell on Nov 7, 2007 at 3:39 AM PST

63. by Theresa Shafer on Nov 7, 2007 at 5:27 AM PST

Chocolate helps me stay sane. Must have chocolate. Need chocolate. Send chocolate ---I will share, honest ----- with friends and family, one for them one for me, one more for them and two for me, and on.

64. by Douglas Brodie on Nov 7, 2007 at 5:45 AM PST

A box of chocolate would be a wonderful chaser for the hot chocolate which I just consumed.

65. by Christine E. on Nov 7, 2007 at 5:53 AM PST

I am the world’s greatest chocoholic. Would love to win some chocolate.

66. by freeoh on Nov 7, 2007 at 6:09 AM PST

I will be there with my taste buds ready. Bring on the chocolate.

75. by jennem on Nov 7, 2007 at 7:36 AM PST

I live in NYC, and I’m scheduled to be working on Friday, repainting my apartment on Saturday and throwing a purely vanilla birthday party for my chocolate-hating 4-year-old on Sunday. How LOVELY it would be for my husband and I to take a chocolate-filled break from all that! (And yes, we certainly WOULD take that break if offered!)

76. by kamewh on Nov 7, 2007 at 7:54 AM PST

I would be unable to attend the show in new York (even though I would LOVE to!) but my sons and husband would happily share the chocolate with me!

77. by Phyllis Ostrofsky on Nov 7, 2007 at 8:03 AM PST

With this short notice, I can still get there
(live on the East Side) and would LOVE to be
there surrounded by chocolate. George Constanza’s
dream was to be ensconced in velvet. Mine ...
chocolate and the show would fulfill that dream.

78. by Suzie Lockhart on Nov 7, 2007 at 8:13 AM PST

Chocolate? Chocolate? I want chocolate!

79. by anonymous on Nov 7, 2007 at 8:17 AM PST

I would love to try these chocolates.

84. by UnsinkableMoo on Nov 7, 2007 at 9:15 AM PST

I would LOVE to attend the chocolate show this weekend. My best friend Jessie and I spend many hours in the kitchen baking and cooking. We both have a passion for food. Last week we made gluten free pumpkin chocolate chip muffins with cream cheese dropped in the top and homemade chai we smashed in her mortar and pessl. I would love to attend this show with her or alone and then I’ll take lots of notes so we can do more experimenting in our kitchens in Astoria.

85. by starsmom on Nov 7, 2007 at 9:25 AM PST

I wouldn’t be able to attend, but I would share the box of chocolates with my little 92 year mother........Chocolate is her favorite thing in life!

86. by Betty on Nov 7, 2007 at 10:39 AM PST

I’d love to be in NYC for the show, but since I can’t I’d love to have chocolate to share with friends.

87. by ressiepooh on Nov 7, 2007 at 11:01 AM PST

I would the chocolates.

88. by anonymous on Nov 7, 2007 at 11:11 AM PST

I live in NYC and love the chocolate show. It’s one of the highlights of Autumn. ;)

89. by Sarah Stern on Nov 7, 2007 at 11:12 AM PST

I can’t make it to the show, but I’d love to share some chocolate with my best friend while watching a chick flick!

90. by Adrienne Rayski on Nov 7, 2007 at 2:18 PM PST

ooh i went to last years show -- i’d love to go again without paying!! hehe

91. by agsweeps on Nov 7, 2007 at 2:20 PM PST

I would love to attend the show but I can’t. I deserve to win the chocolate because I am broke. My bank account is at -250, my house and car are being repossessed and I’m currently working three jobs. The last thing I bought for myself was back in June I bought myself a ticket to see Bob Dylan, my favorite singer. I don’t eat out, I don’t buy CDs, or DVDs, I don’t go to the movies, I can’t afford luxuries such as TV and cell phones, and I haven’t eaten out in over two years. I would LOVE to be able to afford a box of chocolates. Sorry to bring you down but I’m actually very happy, as I have my health and my dog. The stress really gets to me and a box of chocolates would help. Thanks for the giveaway.

92. by laikarose on Nov 7, 2007 at 2:29 PM PST

Charles Chocolates is one of our local chocolatiers. Would love to taste more of his treats! And can’t help but smile inside, everytime someone mentions Charles and his new chocolate factory in Emeryville.

93. by Acme Instant Food on Nov 7, 2007 at 2:39 PM PST

Dear Talented Culinators:

I am indeed on the opposite coast from New York and therefore cannot indulge in the wonderful chocolate show. I do however, appreciate a good taste of chocolate as much as the next guy so I’m happy to vie for an edible box.

As to the question of who I would share the box of chocolates with, I would have to answer honestly. I live in Los Angeles, Hollywood in fact, a string of zip codes not known for over-indulgence in any substance that could possibly contribute to an expanding waistline. This leaves me feeling the lonely outcast. I’m a proud, open, out-of-the-closet chocolate lover! If I won this beautiful box of confections, I would be forced to shut myself in a closet with the box and a nice bottle of Pinot Noir and indulge. I wouldn’t do this out of selfishness, but out of kindness. If I were to openly consume the chocolates I would inflict pain and suffering on the friends and family who might witness the act. This would cause feelings of inner pain and self-loathing to the observers. By eating in solitary confinement I not only experience great happiness and chocolate-induced ecstasy but I save those I love from agonizing pain in the gym.

It sounds like a win-win situation doesn’t it?

94. by oaklandfoodie on Nov 7, 2007 at 2:51 PM PST

I would love to go to NYC and expand my knowledge of the chocolate world. I feel lucky living here in the SF Bay Area with Michael Recchiuti Confections, Charles Chocolate and Scharffenberger at my fingertips. Tourists flock to Ghiradelli and Joseph Schmidt, but it’s nice to have artisans like Michael and Charles redefining our chocolate obsessions. Bring on NYC!!! I’m ready!

95. by champaka on Nov 7, 2007 at 2:57 PM PST

94th comment, So nice thought so I lurk today.
If won, would like to pass onto my six yr old boy.
I like culinate .

Nyc Nyc - I love that city so much & having chocolate in NYC would be the ultimate O!

99. by anonymous on Nov 7, 2007 at 3:58 PM PST

As comment number 99, it’s obvious that there’s lots of choco-competition. Sadly, no go for NYC. Yes, yes, for the box of chocolates. And I would share it with an enemy who I’ve been trying to mend fences with.

100. by Barb on Nov 7, 2007 at 4:13 PM PST

I would lovingly share this with my better half!

101. by bndraldy on Nov 7, 2007 at 4:29 PM PST

I am a true chocoholic but going to Le Chocolate Show New York would be an impossibility. I’ll just have to be content to stay here for the weekend and share the chocolates with my 91 year young mother.

102. by sarahbethe on Nov 7, 2007 at 4:59 PM PST

The chocolate sounds fabulous!

103. by jberry on Nov 7, 2007 at 5:06 PM PST

charles chocolates is a company i haven’t heard of before, however, as my husband is an aspiring chocolatier, i am entering for him! I cross my fingers, and hope that “BitterSweet”, my husbands company will someday aquire the trick of chocolating. Until then, may he gain experience!

110. by pouke on Nov 7, 2007 at 6:02 PM PST

More likely, my chocoholic husband appropriately named Charles too, will share it with me,...may be. Right now he is happily not sharing his box of chocolate covered almonds and this has to stop now.He even likes the pretty box and told me that he was putting it in his bathroom ! we love Charles chocolates and can’t wait to eat the box too !!

111. by eshayward on Nov 7, 2007 at 6:09 PM PST

So, my aunt’s in the hospital in NY, my mom’s visiting her there this weekend, and my mom & I are chocolate fiends. I would take a red-eye to get to NY from Portland Saturday night and go to the show on Sunday, then share the chocolate treats with my aunt in the hospital! Failing that excitement, I’d share the box of chocolates with my wonderful team at work.

112. by Jennifer Harriman on Nov 7, 2007 at 6:12 PM PST

oh please pick me! This contest would be my DREAM win!

113. by David Leach on Nov 7, 2007 at 7:01 PM PST

117. by funpeace on Nov 7, 2007 at 8:47 PM PST

I have a need to go to Le Chocolate Show New York to fulfill the lack of chocolate I have not enjoyed over the past 6 months. I have lost 35 lbs., and now I am ready to enjoy a lovely day of enjoyment of my favorite treat in the world, beautiful, rich, creamy, melt in your mouth...C..H..O..C..O..L..A..T..E!!

118. by MoonMaiden on Nov 7, 2007 at 8:57 PM PST

As the daylight shrinks us towards winter here in the Pacific Northwest, I find myself craving Mother Nature’s best mood elevator. Who needs pharmaceuticals when there is chocolate?
Help us out here, Dr Chuck!

Please give me the ticket to the chocolate show! I am in New York for the first time this week and travelled 19hours to get here from New Zealand. I hear that chocolate cures jetlag, and I would really like to prove this theory correct.

Pick me! Pick me!! I can make it and would love to attend. I looooooove chocolate and would be in heaven if I could visit the show. All those aromas from the different chocolates....ahhhhh, so orgasmic.

I would like to enter for the chocolates also. But reserve the tix for another person that can use them more than me. I avoid driving out that way due to the maniacs on the turnpike. Although the event sounds like a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

I would not be able to attend the event, but I would share the chocolates with my teenage daughter who works so hard at school and at work washing dishes at a restaurant every night.

I would share the chocolates with everyone who came into my house, and with my daughter, bit by bit. Although she can’t eat orally, she does enjoy tasting chocolate. What a pleasure!

Alas, my calendar is full for this time frame. But my mouth is always craving chocolate!

MMMMMMMMMM! Chocolate!

I’m WAY too far away for the show, but the chocolate box would be great. Share? I’d have to share? (Just kidding! Don’t tell my Jenny Craig ocunselor I said that!) I would, of course, share with my husband AND kids.

I would share the Edible Chocolate Box with my kids

Charles is a Bay Area treasure. All the more so for his willingness to share himself and his product with us this weekend. Count me in for the chocolate box. I get the most joy sharing it with neophytes, awakening their taste buds to what chocolate is.

Please include me

My roomate & I both recently move from Los Angeles to NYC, neither one of us have had a date in eons. So going out to a chocolate show would greatly ease a basic human need. It would be a sorely needed & great fun outing for the both of us. Mmmm, chocolate.

Although I would love to attend the Chocolate Show in NYC, I can’t because I live in Eugene, Oregon. However, my daughter, Rachel turns sweet sixteen today and nothing says sweet like an Edible Chocolate Box! I won’t even make her share it with me.

As the winner of this contest (see post #44), I just wanted to thank Chuck and Clay for being such great tour guides today. We learned so much about all things chocolate and are so very full. Baby has been kicking like crazy all day. I think she wants more chocolate...
