Announcing a fundraiser for school gardens

On the evening of December 1, Culinate will sponsor an event that we’re all excited about: the Local Flavors Dinner with Deborah Madison. Held here in Portland, the dinner is a benefit for Slow Food in Schools, a program that directly supports school gardens and nutrition education. The family-style dinner, much of it donated by local purveyors and prepared by area chefs, will take place at the University of Portland's Terrace Room. UP is an institution that places a high value on sustainable and local foods, and we’re grateful to our friends at Bon Appétit, the food service at UP, for steering us toward this facility.
As part of the evening, Culinate columnist and longtime local-food advocate Deborah Madison and other guests — including Paul Johnson, author of the excellent seafood resource Fish Forever, farmer Anthony Boutard, and former restaurateur, chef, and cookbook author Cory Schreiber — will engage in a moderated (and no doubt lively) discussion about supporting local foodsheds and the importance of helping children learn more about the sources of their food.
There will also be a silent auction and other merriment.
