Win your own copy of David Lebovitz’s new book

By Kim Carlson
August 2, 2007

Is there a better month than August for eating ice cream? Of course, if you want fresh Oregon strawberry ice cream, you have to have that earlier, but there are plenty of seasonal flavors to be had during this heyday of summer: cherry, peach, blackberry, huckleberry . . .

OK, and there’s always chocolate. Aren’t we lucky that chocolate bars don’t have a season?

I scream for ice cream.

And any time is the right time for vanilla.

(Did you see this key to what your favorite ice cream flavor says about you? I’m remaining noncommittal.)

From time to time we receive cookbooks in the office for review; that’s what happened a few months ago when FedEx brought a copy of David Lebovitz's new book, The Perfect Scoop. I won’t say Caroline, our managing editor, pounced on it — she’s not a pouncer — but after a day or two, it did go home with her. She and Caleb, her husband, spent several weekends whipping up batches of ice cream, and every Monday she dutifully reported their many successes to us in the office while we tried not to drool.

One day, after ample testing had been done and a review had been written, Caroline brought the book with her to work to pass along to James, the software chief, so that he could have a go at a recipe or two. But he took one look at what had clearly become Caroline and Caleb’s beloved cookbook — with its tabbed and stained pages — and sent it right back with her.

You can just tell when a book has found its home.

The bookish people at Ten Speed Press would like us to help them give away three copies of The Perfect Scoop, signed to each lucky winner by the author. So that’s what we’re going to do, right here. Just leave a comment below, telling us who you’re going to make ice cream with, or for, and presto, you’re entered in the contest. We’ll pick three random winners on Friday, August 10.

Good lick!

Please note: Entry for the drawing is closed as of 12:45 pm (PST), August 10th, 2007.

Congratulations to our three winners: Jenny from California, Amy from Washington, and Jeffrey. We hope you all enjoy your “Perfect Scoop.”

My two-year-old. There is no more appreciative audience. And, yeah, I might have some myself.

I love making ice cream with my kids - ages 6 and 8. They have such creative minds when it comes to dreaming up flavores. And I love that they want to share it with neighbors in a backyard “cafe”.

Confession: I already own this wonderful book. I even had David L. sign my copy when he was visiting Theo Chocolate in Seattle recently. I also sampled about 20 of Theo’s chocolates while I was at it, but that’s a separate story.
Another confession: I actaully helped test a few of the recipes (including that off-the-hook salted butter caramel sauce, by the way) last summer (you can see my name in “Acknowledgements - woo woo!) and bought my ice cream maker expressly for this task. Since I received my book, I’ve made about 10 more flavors (oh my god, the butterscotch- page 44) and am nowhere near finished.
But here’s why I want another copy of The Perfect Scoop: My sister keeps borrowing mine, which has really put a wrench in my ice cream production. She needs her own book, and I guess I’m too cheap to buy it for her.
P.S.: I own a waffle cone maker. If I win the book, I volunteer to make ginger snap and chocolate waffle cones for your staff. I live in Portland.

I will be making the ice cream with my niece at the cottage and we will share it with the entire family. We are about 12 people so we might have to make more than one batch, but it will be well worth it. I think with start with a rich deep chocolate and then maybe a dulce de leche....

5. by tlambert on Aug 6, 2007 at 1:48 PM PDT

my girlfriend and I enjoy making ice cream together, and when I first stumbled onto a recipe shared from The Perfect Scoop online, our ice cream making jumped to a whole new level. I’d love to surprise her with a signed copy of this book!

I make ice cream for my bf all the time, particularly in the summer.

I’d love a copy of this book.

7. by elliemay on Aug 6, 2007 at 4:18 PM PDT

I’ve never made ice cream, but I’ve been planning to ever since I saw the instructions for how to make ice cream without a machine that David recently posted on his blog (so far, I’ve been too cheap to buy a machine for myself - maybe if I had the book, it would give me the perfect reason to finally splurge on one!) For my first time out, I will be making good old vanilla and sharing it with my boyfriend.

Huge ice cream fan---would make solely for my eating purposes.

9. by its just luc on Aug 6, 2007 at 8:10 PM PDT

I would make ice cream for my roommates...because they work all day and I’m their quasi-house mother as we settle into this big city.

10. by LAmonkeygirl on Aug 6, 2007 at 8:12 PM PDT

I would make ice cream for my husband and myself - I’ve made a few batches of frozen custard from another cookbook, and they were phenomenal! Plus, I love to bake, so I could make completely homemade ice cream sandwiches.

11. by paperblade on Aug 6, 2007 at 10:13 PM PDT

I have been working as an Editorial intern in a publishing company and they have been the best anyone could ever have, just for the learning experience.

I would love to win the cookbook so that I can whip up some lovely ice cream as my way of saying thanks for everything that they have done / provided.

Thank You.

15. by maeling lam on Aug 7, 2007 at 12:28 AM PDT

I had lychee sorbet recently and been craving ever since. I would love to make my own variation of it and pass it around. I think everyone should try this light and airy concoction. I wonder what asian pear sorbet would be like?!?!?

16. by kathy winters on Aug 7, 2007 at 1:46 AM PDT

I’d love a reason to get my ice cream maker off the shelf and put it to work again and make a new recipe for an upcoming party. thanks

17. by Luke on Aug 7, 2007 at 2:16 AM PDT

I’d probably have some old friends over for ice cream and coffee. When joanna mentioned the page 44 butterscotch, my eyes glazed over and I felt kinda fuzzy on my insides, so I think I’d start there.

18. by Daniela on Aug 7, 2007 at 4:28 AM PDT

I’ve been reading this book from the library and thinking it would be the perfect gift for my boyfriend. How fun would it be for him to learn how to cook starting from the dessert?

19. by Jason on Aug 7, 2007 at 4:40 AM PDT

I’m going to make the ice cream for my dad!

20. by Jessica on Aug 7, 2007 at 5:17 AM PDT

I’m going to make some for my sister, since she gave me an ice-cream maker for my wedding last year and I haven’t used it yet!!

21. by dcast79 on Aug 7, 2007 at 5:18 AM PDT

I’m a high school teacher and there is no better way to soothe my students and get their undevided attention in the scorching months of late and early summer when the classroom temperatures reach the 100’s than with ice cream! I will make them those cool, delicious treats and I’ll bet they’ll pay attention to every word I say :)

22. by mememb on Aug 7, 2007 at 5:22 AM PDT

I would love to make ice cream with my soon-to-be 8-year old grandaughter who loves to spend time with me in the kitchen mixing up all sorts of treats.

24. by Nicole from: For the Love of Food on Aug 7, 2007 at 7:13 AM PDT

Who will I be making ice cream for?? For my readers, of course! I mean, I’ll have to eat it all myself and maybe share some with my husband, but I’m in need of more ice-cream-a-licious posts for my blog!! Please send me one!!

25. by Jim on Aug 7, 2007 at 7:28 AM PDT

Who am I making ice cream for? Whoever’s in the kitchen at the time. God knows it’s not going to last much longer than that!

26. by VT on Aug 7, 2007 at 7:39 AM PDT

My wife - it’s about time I pampered her for a bit! Though I’ll end up eating most of the ice cream.

27. by Matt on Aug 7, 2007 at 8:32 AM PDT

I’d like to make a batch of ice cream for my great-uncle. He’s been such an inspiration, and I recently got the ice cream maker attachment for my kitchen aid as a wedding present, so what better way to brighten his day than to make a batch of homemade ice cream? :)

28. by misformargaret on Aug 7, 2007 at 8:52 AM PDT

I will use any excuse to make ice cream for anyone, anytime! Need more recipes!

29. by Katie on Aug 7, 2007 at 8:57 AM PDT

I’ll make it for myself, as a weekend project... because I finally found a promising recipe online that doesn’t require a machine!

30. by Amy on Aug 7, 2007 at 8:59 AM PDT

36. by Jenny on Aug 7, 2007 at 12:14 PM PDT

I’d be making it with my boyfriend, and serving it at one of my monthly “food & game days” to all of my friends. Though I’d be sure to save some extra for myself.

37. by robin on Aug 7, 2007 at 2:33 PM PDT

I’ll be making it for my granddad, who celebrates his 93rd birthday this month! My 3-year-old niece will be there, as she knows that will be the day that “he turns old.” She’ll probably eat most of it herself!

38. by Lane on Aug 7, 2007 at 3:26 PM PDT

Hmmm. I’d make a batch for my upcoming birthday. Ice cream for all!

39. by Marianne on Aug 7, 2007 at 3:50 PM PDT

I would make some ice cream for my mom. She’s mad at me right now, and I have always been able to win her affections back with a great-flavored ice cream.

40. by michelle on Aug 7, 2007 at 4:13 PM PDT

I’ve been lusting over this book for a while! Who would I make ice cream with? My wonderful husband! And then... we’d share it with our wonderful friends! The more the merrier! :)

41. by sarah on Aug 7, 2007 at 6:24 PM PDT

with my sister for the two of us to enjoy...plus my dog will probably get to eat some as well :)

42. by Heather on Aug 8, 2007 at 8:36 AM PDT

I admit that I will be making ice cream for myself. My first child is due on Sept. 4th and my husband keeps eating all of the ice cream I buy! What kind of man eats a pregnant woman’s ice cream?!

43. by jedriz on Aug 8, 2007 at 9:32 AM PDT

My wife and I eat ice cream just about every night after dinner. We are always on the lookout for new recipes :)

44. by Kiriel on Aug 8, 2007 at 10:05 AM PDT

I would like to whip up some sort of extraordinary ice-cream for my fellow foodbloggers! We hold occasional “challenge” dinner parties, and I would love to really surprise my friends with something exotic and unexpected.

45. by hoopysmom on Aug 8, 2007 at 10:21 AM PDT

Nothing much better than a delicious vanilla ice cream...naked and ready for whatever topping strikes the mood! Am always in search of the perfect recipe for DH and me. Ice cream every night? Yes!

46. by sarahbethe on Aug 8, 2007 at 10:22 AM PDT

49. by guaclova on Aug 8, 2007 at 10:24 AM PDT

I remember making ice cream with my little brother when we were kids, but I dont think anything we made would match up to some of the recipes in this book. Id love to whip up some scrumptious new ice cream flavors for my friends to try!

50. by amberfarmer85 on Aug 8, 2007 at 10:28 AM PDT

I’d make ice cream for my husband and I to enjoy together on these oppressively hot and humid Arkansas nights. There is nothing better to end the day (and start the evening) with!

51. by amwhiteh on Aug 8, 2007 at 10:46 AM PDT

I’ll be making ice cream for my boyfriend, who claims I can’t do anything in the kitchen!

52. by abrahamr on Aug 8, 2007 at 10:48 AM PDT

I’d make ice cream with and for my husband -- for being the love of my life!

53. by kaleforsale@blogspot.com on Aug 8, 2007 at 11:00 AM PDT

My plan is to make ice cream with my husband’s, the cute guy’s, six sons, their four wives and two girlfriends. And then there are the seven granddaughters and six grandsons and my one god daughter; all of whom would get their scoops first!

54. by dusksunset on Aug 8, 2007 at 11:06 AM PDT

This might inspire me to host an ice cream party - once it gets cool enough to keep it from melting instantly.

55. by Mo on Aug 8, 2007 at 11:09 AM PDT

I am going to make some fresh peach ice cream and share it with my roommates (if they are lucky!).

56. by Marcela on Aug 8, 2007 at 11:22 AM PDT

58. by intheyearofthepig on Aug 8, 2007 at 11:42 AM PDT

for Monday potlucks and for people I play music with for after practice when we had to turn off the fans to avoid blowing the power and close the windows to avoid noise complaints.

My boyfriend and I are ice cream addicts. We must have ice cream every single day. It doesn’t matter if it’s freezing out. So I would love to try to make homemade ice cream for us. I would love to try a coconut or mango flavor. YUM.

60. by laine608 on Aug 8, 2007 at 11:59 AM PDT

I’ll make ice cream for my boyfriend Stewart. His favorite flavor is vanilla, but I’m sure that there are some recipes in this book that I can persuade him to try.

61. by orchidlady01 on Aug 8, 2007 at 1:16 PM PDT

Chocolate and coffee ice cream are our family favorites but to make shakes you need vanilla or strawberry.

62. by tttt on Aug 8, 2007 at 1:59 PM PDT

As official ice cream inspector of the house it’s my duty to put all incoming ice creams that enter my house through a rigorous screening process. Sometimes this can mean many, many, many frost bitten hours of ice creamy ecstasy..er..work. Luckily my husband takes his ice cream just as seriously as me so I make ice cream for the both of us to enjoy, but I get to lick the freezer bowl.

63. by Ron Miller on Aug 8, 2007 at 2:44 PM PDT

Making Ice Cream that’s worth eating with the family and for the family, hopefully at under 5.99 a gallon, sounds like a winner book!

64. by Dayna on Aug 8, 2007 at 4:10 PM PDT

We are ice cream junkies in this house! Any help that it is indeed the best ice cream month and I have kids? So far I haven’t bought a commercial ice cream maker, maybe I’m afraid it will actually make us eat MORE, but so far we’ve made our own sherbets and tested out the backyard ice cream with a bag, cream and ice. With all the fantastic buzz, I think that this would be the book to break the mold and put me on a proper homemade ice cream path!

65. by elizo on Aug 8, 2007 at 4:51 PM PDT

I’ll be making ice cream with my addicted husband, who thinks the four food groups are ice cream, ice cream, ice cream, and ice cream.

Another ice cream junkie checking in.

I really love our ice cream maker.

68. by That's nuts! on Aug 8, 2007 at 6:15 PM PDT

I’m going to make ice cream with with some of my Japanese friends and English students in Japan. We don’t have an ice cream maker so we are going to use 2 sizes of zip lock bags, ice and salt (though probably table salt since I’m not sure if they ahve rock salt here). It’s all about sharing cultures and improvising when I do cook here. I’m currently living on Hokkaido where there are actually lots of dairy farms. “Softo creamu” (in Japanese), or soft serve is really popular here but I’m more a fan of flavored hard ice cream.

69. by rhey on Aug 8, 2007 at 6:34 PM PDT

i make ice cream for myself, who else? of course, i do share with my boys and hubby. : )

I’ll make the peach sorbet for Erika and Annika!

79. by keeneye on Aug 10, 2007 at 12:43 PM PDT

I’m making peach cobbler icecream for the couple that moved in across the street. I haven’t met them yet, and I know that introducing myself with a tub of my freshly made dessert will be a great way to welcome them to the neighborhood.
