Walking out

Are unions dying?

December 4, 2012

Organized labor is in a tight spot these days. Last year saw a vicious Wisconsin fracas over public employees. This year we had a confusing teachers' strike in Chicago. And of course, the 2012 presidential campaign was full of heated discussion about workers’ unions.

Workers and unions haven’t totally parted ways, however. Walmart workers threatened to walk out on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) to protest low wages. And in New York, fast-food workers did walk out, also as a statement about low wages and a call to unionize.

Will fast-food workers unionize? Will it work for them? Stay tuned.
