As the Independent recently reported, a new British health study has calculated that “lowering meat consumption in the U.K. would prevent about 45,000 premature deaths a year,” largely by staving off heart disease, strokes, and cancer.
As noted by the study’s backer, the nonprofit Friends of the Earth, eating less meat is also better for the planet, helping to “slow the rates of climate change and deforestation.” The organization’s policy director, Craig Bennett, told the paper, “We don’t need to go vegetarian to look after ourselves and our planet — but we do need to cut down on meat.”
