No more bake sales?

New York parents protest

So it’s a good thing that America’s public schools are trying to fight the national obesity epidemic by banning certain foods, yes? Well, perhaps not, if school rules restrict campus food sales to “healthy” junk food, such as reduced-fat Doritos. As this week’s issue of the New Yorker noted, some New York City parents have been protesting local regulations, which prohibit bake sales and sanction said tortilla chips instead:

The crowd was chanting, “Yay, apple! Boo, Snapple!” Several mothers jumped up and down, waving whisks. . . . There was, however, a counter-rally. Behind her, a group of 12-year-old boys were lined up. “We want junk food!” they shouted. “We want Doritos!”
