New takes on farming

By Savannah Naffziger

The farms covered in blogs and magazines tend to be tiny: Edible Portland’s Diary of a Young Farmer, for example, or the Missouri-based Farmgirl Fare. Midsize, 1,000-plus-acre farms, however, don’t usually get much coverage. But Gourmet.com’s Sam Hurst is chronicling all sorts of farmers with his Four Farmers Project, running weekly through October. There’s a 2,400-acre organic farm, yes, but there’s also a family of South Dakotans who farm GMO corn for ethanol, and a corn farmer who happily lists the perks of spraying pesticides. Check it out for another perspective on what it actually means to be a farmer in America.
