Simple holiday fare

The January issue of Gourmet arrived in homes this week, with a dish of spaghetti and meatballs on its cover. Spaghetti and meatballs? Well, sure. It’s recession time, folks, and everybody’s being a frugalista. Even Martha Stewart has come out in favor of simple holiday cooking. Don’t believe us? Check out this year’s December issue of Martha Stewart Living, its cover spattered with homey cookies and candies, and then dig out last year’s December issue, with its elaborate cake surrounded by gingerbread tiles made to look like 17th-century Amsterdam housefronts. Who says things aren’t getting easier — in the kitchen, at least?
