Some more s’mores

Camping’s most popular dessert

By Liz Crain
May 15, 2008

Camping season is fast approaching, which means strong sales for graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars, ready to be assembled over a smoking campfire with the aid of a whittled stick. Although most people prefer to keep s’mores simple, there are plenty of takes on this classic campfire dessert.

Karletta Moniz, of the blog The Art of Tasting Chocolate, recently devoted a post to s’mores, in which she wrote about a new cookbook dedicated to them as well as National S’mores Day (August 10).

This time last year, Nicole Weston, of the food blog Baking Bites, posted about her marshmallow Peeps S'mores, which she microwaved rather than roasted. Although Weston recognized that roasted Peeps over the fire would’ve been ideal, she noted, “The sugary, chocolaty goodness was still hard to resist.”

Instructables offers a creative way to make s’mores without firing up the backyard barbecue, lighting a campfire, or keeping a very watchful eye on the microwave. And Charles Chocolates has a gourmet s'mores recipe for the campfire epicure.

Finally, the Washington Post has an article dedicated to s'mores and nothing else. Chomp away.
