The Bay Area is taking composting to a new level. Marc Rumminger at the Ethicurean details his trip to the Vacaville landfill, where food waste from all over San Francisco and Berkeley is being composted on a large scale. The post details the process from kitchen to sale to farmers. Look at the comments section for potential flaws in the plan: Vacaville is going to need to keep its fertilizer actually organic, so that they don’t end up with a scandal on their hands like this herbicide-contaminated manure in Britain.
