June 10: Table Talk

Garden talk

By
June 8, 2010

Fresh from a visit to Washington, D.C., where she joined hundreds of other chefs at the White House to talk about kids and food — and had a tour of Michelle Obama’s kitchen garden — Kim O’Donnel is back and ready to chat. The topic this week is growing your own food — and, as always, anything you want to talk about (including the FLOTUS).

Kim O’Donnel in the White House garden.

Kim is joined by special guest Amy Pennington, author of the recently released Urban Pantry, and an expert on gardening and preserving.

(You may recall that Amy and Kim chatted together in March; read the transcript.)

Join the gardening chat here at 1 p.m. ET, 10 a.m. PT, Thursday, June 10.

Kim, a trained chef and longtime food journalist, is writing a cookbook for people trying to eat less meat. Every week, she brings ideas, tips, and recipes to her live chats — right here at Table Talk, most Thursdays.

How'd you score an invite to the White House garden?
Thursday June 10, 2010 10:04 Amy Pennington

Kim ODonnel:
It was such a cool experience. I went as part of a delegation with IACP, a culinary association. Had about 72 hours to make up my mind. There were a total of 500 chefs from around the country congregated on the south lawn to kick off the First Lady's newest intiative, Chefs Move to Schools, as part of her Let's Move, anti-obesity efforts. The idea is that chefs will adopt schools to help turn around the shoddy, horrible state of school food.

It's a tall order, getting 95,000 chefs to each adopt a public school, but i think it's do-able over time.

so Amy, wanted to give you a progress report on my pots of herbs. Flat-leaf parsley from seed is going gang busters. So is my mint! The rain we've been having in Seattle has been boosting the herbs right along. Have waited tho for a pot of cherry tomatoes. Think it's safe to go ahead?

(made it!) I've cut way back on my March gardening plans, but I have put in a mess of squashes: zucch, spagh, and butternut. And some asparagus for... 2012. Garlic will come much later this year, but I did grab a few heirloom peppers that are very comfortable in a spare 5-gal. bucket. Blueberry plants are still coming, and a bunch of perennial clumps of flowers from our CSA farmer. Work in progress. If I get really inspired, I'll throw some toms in pots, too. There are plenty of transplats available at our public farmers market.

Amy Pennington:
A note on adding coffee grounds - they are a great mulch and add organic matter to the garden. This is a very good thing! They do not, however, add many nutrients. Plants need phosporus, nitrogen & potassium to grow.

Jackie - also ie strawberries & blues - Blues will need a BIG pot and they like full sun. Strawberries you can get away with a smaller pot and maybe dappled sun, but for the amount of space it takes up, the plant won't produce much. For container gardening, it's a safer/more productive strategy to grow something that will give you more harvest.

When you grow in containers, you are limiting the space in which a plant can grow. Most plants will SURVIVE in a container, but will the prosper? Often, no. All container plants will need some sort of fertilizer, as food for the plant. AND, different plants require different space. So............if you have a plant that's suffering, find a pic online of that same plant in soil. If it's HUGE, the odds are your container is too small.
