The Classic Martini

From the book The Basic Gourmet Entertains by Diane Morgan, Dan Taggart, and Kathleen Taggart
Serves 1

Introduction

For martini aficionados, this is the all-time before-dinner cocktail. Ideally, it is served “straight up” in a stemmed martini glass. Alternatively, pour the unshaken liquor over ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass.

Ingredients

¼ cup dry gin
1 to 2 tsp. dry vermouth
1 cup ice cubes or cracked (not crushed) ice
~ Twist of lemon peel or 1 or 2 pimiento-stuffed olives on a pick

Steps

  1. Shake liquor with ice in a cocktail shaker or medium jar with lid for 10 to 15 seconds. Strain (pour through a small sieve if using jar as shaker) into martini glass. Garnish with the lemon peel or olives.
