Happy Groundhog Day! I am really enjoying the longer days. It’s nice to have the sun come up before 8am.

What’s available this week? Spinach, kale, collards and arugula will be the predominant greens this week. (n.b Spinach and arugula both make excellent winter pestos. I’ve saved an arugula pesto recipe in our featured recipes above.) Other vegetables include carrots, beets, kohlrabi, turnips, radishes, potatoes, onions and winter squash. You will also find a nice selection of apples, pears and asian pears plus hazelnuts and chestnuts.

More light and warmer temperatures equal more things to harvest. Spinach, kale, collards and arugula top the greens list. Osmogaia had some salad mix last week and should have more this this week. Other vegetables include carrots, beets, kohlrabi, turnips, radishes, potatoes, onions and winter squash. You will also find a nice selection of apples, pears and asian pears plus hazelnuts and chestnuts.

Happy New Year!
I must admit that I was very happy not to be running a market last Tuesday. We are under cover but the drive home would have been a mess. I hope not too many of you were caught up in a long trip home.
You should find a decent selection of root vegetables this week. Winter greens like kale, spinach and chard should be available too. The snow level has moved up over the last few weeks so Bill may have been able to harvest some hedgehogs this week. Nonetheless, he will have shiitake and maitake mushrooms too. Packer Orchards was planning on coming this week with apples, pears and baked goods (including a few new items.) Unfortunately, the water line in the bakery failed in three places so the Packers busy reassembling the kitchen. They will be back next week.

This Tuesday’s market is the last market for 2009. We are closed next week (December 29th) and open again on January 5, 2010. The farmers, vendors and I are grateful for the support we’ve received. Regardless of the weather conditions, you shoppers return week after week and we thank you for coming. And we owe a big thank you to everyone at Ashforth-Pacific for providing a very pleasant space for the market and helping in many ways. We look forward to a great 2010.
The winter crops are slowly recovering from the cold snap. Greens are still limited but are improving. Root vegetables such as beets, parsnips, carrots, radishes and turnips should readily available. Winter squashes should be available as well. Apples, pears, chestnuts and hazelnuts should be available too.

The cold weather finally let up. As I explained last week, most vegetables need to have a core temperature above freezing to be harvested so produce availability will be limited. A few farmers have greenhouses and cold frames and should be able to harvest. Greens will have limited availability. Root vegetables such as beets, parsnips, carrots, radishes and turnips should be fine. Winter squashes should be available as well. Apples, pears, chestnuts and hazelnuts should be available too. Pine Mountain Ranch will be coming so expect to find bison, chicken, yak and elk. Greenville Farms and Pine Mountain Ranch should both have eggs.

There is a nice produce selection for Thanksgiving week at the market. You should find spinach, kale, chard and other greens, celery, beets, cabbage, winter squash, carrots, radishes and turnips. Apples, asian pears, pears, chestnuts and hazelnuts will be available as well. Falling temperatures in the mountains are starting to limit the wild mushroom supply. Still, you should have matsutakes and chanterelles (yellow and white) as well as cultivated shiitake and maitake mushrooms. You may find a few cauliflower mushrooms too. Bill also has mushroom blocks for sale if you want to grow your own shiitake or oyster mushrooms. Stop by his table and take a look.
