Introduction
This classic treat from Baltimore’s Flowermart festival is nothing more than a fresh lemon paired with a peppermint stick.
Ingredients
| 1 | lemon, cut in half along the equator (or 2 smaller lemons with the top ends cut off) |
| 2 | soft cane-sugar peppermint sticks (often labeled “old-fashioned peppermint sticks” — see Note) |
Steps
- Place one peppermint stick in the middle of one lemon half. Repeat.
- Suck the lemon juice through the peppermint stick (as you would a straw) while squeezing the lemon gently.
Notes
A good source of old-fashioned peppermint sticks is Bobs. Be sure to order the Sweet Stripes Mint Sticks.

I was looking for a recipe for Old fashioned peppermint sticks and came across your recipe & photo. I am from Philadelphia and we use to make these in the summer as a treat in the 1970’s! People look at me like I’m crazy when I talk about how good this combination of Lemon & mint is and you are the first person I’ve ever heard of outside of Philly that knows about it. I live in Texas presently and you can just imagine the looks I get eating one of these now as an adult!
Have a great day!
P.S. We called them Lemon-Twists then.
Thanks!
Dana from Texas

Yum, I live in Delaware and lemon sticks are one of the most popular treats at our “Hospital Fair” My 4 year old just had his first one this past weekend and I am now on the hunt for peppermint sticks so that we can make our own at home. He loved it!!

I lived in Baltimore when I was young, in the early 70’s. I remembered going to school carnivals and getting these lemons with pepperment sticks in them, they were so good. Everyone in my family said they did’nt remember them and I am the youngest. So I thought I was crazy until I came across this recipe. Now I know it is real. Thanks, I can’t wait to try them again.
