My favorite cookbook gift was my mother’s gift of “The Classic Cuisine of the Italian Jews” which is now out of print I believe. It is a wonderful look not only at a great cuisine (and great for someone who doesn’t eat pork or mix milk and meat but loves Italian cooking), but also at a vanished way of life. It made such an impact on me that when I visited Italy, I made a special pilgrimage to the hill town of Pittaglio where the author lived as a girl.
