What a great post! I lived on the beach close to Big Sur one summer, back in the ‘70’s and we would practice freeganism, scavenging perfectly ripe fruits and vegetables from garbage dumpsters and creating basically vegetarian fare over an open fire, using trash can lids as a big wok. Of course back in those days nobody had a nomenclature for it. It was called survival. I loved your recipe for the chanterelle empanadas. I just have to find an abundanceof wild mushrooms.
