the food I just can’t learn to like

On Culinate, JudithK just posted about an intriguing ingredient I’ve never tried before — black celery — but though I’m intrigued, I probably won’t ever seek it out — even if I am fortunate enough to travel to Trevi.

Over on The Oregonian’s food blog, Leslie Cole sings the praises of another ingredient — celeriac — but I probably won’t be buying any of that either.

My problem? Celery just doesn’t do it for me. In fact, unless it’s sautéed with carrots and onion in a sort of mirepoix — or hidden in restaurant food — I avoid the stuff.

My poor family loves celery, but we rarely have extra on hand — because I don’t buy it.

Are there foods you’d like to like — but you just don’t?

Beets. I have a long-standing challenge to make myself like them, but so far, nothing. I order them in just about every good restaurant we go to, looking for that magic preparation that will suddenly convert me, but still Eh. I won a similar battle with lamb several years back, and am so glad I did, so I’m not ready to give up yet!

Lima beans. They are so good for you, but I can’t figure out how we’re supposed to eat them without having them stick, dryly to the roof of my mouth.

I am the same way with celery and lima beans. I am not fond of cottage cheese unless it is cooked in lasagna or something like that and please don’t make me eat raw cucumbers.

side-note: i love celeriac. i know i’m bad saying it, but you should try it at least once!

okay, mine are eggplant. and mushrooms. my life would be a million times easier if i could stomach those 2 things.
i’m vegetarian, so i always get served piles of ‘em as an entree. so thick-skinned, slimy, gushy...the thought is making me gag as i write this! and mushrooms, well, they’re just sick!

Anchovies and sardines. I keep reading how wonderful they are, but I just can’t bring myself to bite into one.

OH...how could you hate celery?? My heart is broken.
Just try this: make a good, garlicky, blue cheese salad dressing, thinly slice up the dreaded celery and toss with the garlic dressing. Crunch meets blue cheese, what could be bad?? LOL!
Vesperflight: wish you were nearby.... anchovies are pure magic.

broccoli. I eat it, and actually don’t completely loath it now, but the prejudices of childhood remain strong!

Kim - my husband agrees with you on the celery! :)
