Learned about food & cooking watching Mom in the kitchen and Dad in the garden. My kids grew up in a single parent household without that joy, and yet happily, they gravitate towards it as young adults, living in Raleigh and Brevard -- two NC towns that have wonderful small local farms and farmers markets. These days, with time on my hands, I experiment and play in my own kitchen and garden. I’m planting earlier and later than my father ever did and overjoyed at the results of cold weather gardening. AND ... I run so I can eat everything and anything I want to cook. I’ve also helped initiate a farmer’s market in my little downtown area of Clayton, NC. This is it’s third year of operation and our customer base is small but loyal and growing. This year a neighboring town just east of us has watched us grow and is opening it’s own downtown farmer’s market this week. The paradigm is beginning to shift in this once rural, still very conservative little corner of NC’s RTP area. People are hearing the message and the call for sustainability, local farms and local food. It is a joy to watch the changes.
