This morning’s breakfast -- sliced and fried some corn tortillas, sauteed a Gartner’s weiner and scrambled both with eggs, cream, red chile flakes and topped all that with grated cheddar. On the side: smoky salsa. Tex-me top o’ the morning.
This is an old family hors d’oeuvre that I always make for the holidays. Party rye topped with a blend of grated parmesan, mozzerella, mayonnaise and grated onion. Put them under the broiler for two minutes and they’re nicely browned and bubbly and ready to eat. Yum.
I cooked up a mean smoked salmon alfredo last week and blogged about it a few days ago. I don’t usually include recipes on my blog but I did for this one. It’s easy and delicious.
Last night’s dinner -- broiled brussels finished with bacon, sauteed wrinkled old man chiles, sliced tomatoes (still ripening in the utility room), sausage and kraut. Good stuff.
After I roasted chicken last week I made a stock and then made this soup out of it with chicken, rice, lots of lime, roasted garlic, ginger, homemade habanero hot sauce, sweet pea tomatoes, celery tops and stalks, carrot and onion. Our house smelled amazing that day.
of the season! I minced herbs from the yard -- sage, thyme, oregano, rosemary -- and forked them into softened butter. I spread that blend in the cavity, under the skin and all over the skin before roasting. So good.
To continue on the head out track...Home Orchard Society’s All About Fruit Show is this weekend and so is Wordstock -- food focused this year.
Thank you!! I wish I’d seen this earlier today but will definitely try to get out there. Sounds great.
It felt really good to make a one-pot meal tonight with so much from the garden -- celery, tomatoes, basil, golden chard and chive blossoms (yes, still)all went into a red lentil curry with some other veggies, chicken broth, coconut milk and lots of spice. I used turmeric, cumin, coriander, dried ginger, mustard seed and five spice. Ladled over rice it made us very happy.
My favorite lunch this weekend was this quesadilla with homemade salsa and hot sauce, salsa rice topped with fresh chard and a super sweet Brooks plum from out front.
Still munching on quick medley lunches and this salad was really good -- green leaf, parsley, and a quick miso vin. with canned smoked tuna, salsa, kraut and baba. The last few all mixed up bites were the best.
I’m finishing up my book due in a few days and can barely step away from it long enough to boil a pot of rice. Lucky for me I’ve done a lot of homegrown food prep in the last few weeks so I’m well stocked. This lunch was a little bit of everything -- a friend’s beet/potato/dill salad, homemade salsa and kimchi, a quarter slice of Pizza Fino pizza, a bit of a Liberty Glass muffaletta and home baba with hot sauce on bread. Perfect finger food and then some to keep working with.
I’ve been making quick tomato cheese breads a lot this summer. I finely grate hard salty cheese on top of the bread (in this case parmesan), top it with sliced tomatoes and broil it for 2-3 minutes. With a salad it’s a great summer lunch.
Our good friends have been visiting and the other night they made an awesome dinner of jerked pork short ribs and grilled corn. Dave started the ribs in the oven slow and low and then finished them on the grill with the corn. Ever eaten grilled corn with a little mayo spread on it? I hadn’t either and was blown away by how good it is.
This is the first year I’ve grown itty bitty sweet pea tomatoes and I’ve been using them in everything. The other night I made this quick pasta sauce with a few glugs of olive oil, lots of garlic and fresh chiles, fresh basil and oregano and a nice bit of grated parmesan to top it off. Random addition: Meryl Streep is amazing as Julia Child!
Sorry, this isn’t xxx that’s what I like to call it...
I blended chiles from the yard with lots of sweetpea tomatoes, garlic, lime juice, olive oil, ground mustard seed, a small plum and a splash of vinegar. Delicious.
Salsa days are here again -- big batch of salsa with lime, broiled and slightly blackened homegrown tomatoes and onions. Chimayo and Old Wrinkled Man chiles from the backyard. And of course lots of garlic, salt, lime and cilantro.
I made this yummy cake for my boyfriend’s birthday because we have A LOT of plums right now from a few trees in the side yard. He loved it.
