I typically pick one or 2 “star” ingredients that I want to cook with, then read 5-6 recipes that use those ingredients, and finally come up with my own concoction based on what’s in the fridge/pantry.

Seems like this book could cut out some of the research, and give good guidance as to what good substitutes would be.
